The 2017 Fishing Season is Upon Us!

Posted by Preston Muller on Friday, January 27, 2017,
Ahhhh, gotta love this time of year. The boats all received a makeover, the tackle is restocked, the captains have had their RNR and the focus is on scouting new areas and preparing for March aka spring break madness!

This week we found the redfish and sheepshead bite inshore remains strong. The weather has been unseasonably warm and the water temps are much higher than years past. The nearshore bite has also been great. The Blackfin Tuna were thick in close last week and the bigger Amberjack...

Kings, Bonita and Mahi

Posted by Preston Muller on Sunday, August 14, 2016,
The title says it all! The past several weeks have been great fishing for these pelagic fish. I can't recall another season where the kings and bonitos have been so thick. Most days, the bonitos can be seen on the surface but the thousands feeding on glass minnows. It literally looks like an acre of pure whitewater in the middle of the gulf. Mani have started firing up too. Not much size them but there is no size limit here in the Gulf. We have been site casting artificial and landing anywher...

July 2016..its getting HOT, HOT HOT

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, July 5, 2016,
King Mackerel, Snapper, Amberjack, Triggerfish, Vermillion Snapper, Sharks, Grouper, Spanish Mackerel, Red Drum,

Mahi...Its all GOOD in July. The fishing has been REALLY great lately. Although, beginning on July 10th, there will not be

much in season (to bring home), there is always room for CATCHING. Everybody has been getting their fill of top-water

artificial jacks, jigging for snapper, jacks and scamp as well as slow trolling for kings. Everyday has been different and lots

of fun! Peak se...

Summer 2016 - Destin Fishing Charter Report

Posted by Preston Muller on Monday, June 6, 2016,
Well summer has arrived and the fish have been HUNGRY! Here is a list of what has been HOT:

King Mackerel - GREAT. Best method has been flat lining live baits 30-40 feet from boat while drifting or while bottom fishing.

Mangrove Snapper - GREAT. We have been seeing record amounts of Mangroves this year and are averaging double digit numbers on 6 hour or more trips.

Red Snapper - GOOD. Although the number are down from last year, we believe they are still offshore. We are averaging 6-8 red snappe...

Spring is on FIRE!

Posted by Preston Muller on Saturday, April 2, 2016,
Sheepshead, Redfish, Amberjack and Triggerfish have been plentiful lately. The water is warming up and we caught our first king of the year last week. Live bait has also moved in around the pass. This is the time of year to get out there and enjoy the warm weather when its not too hot and hone your skills before summer. Cobia have also showed up which marks the beginning of our Pelagic season. It won't be long before Mahi, Wahoo and others are here in our warm Gulf waters. If you want to go h...

January 2016

Posted by Preston Muller on Thursday, January 14, 2016,
Triggerfish and Jacks are on FIRE! Jacks are in close and piles of triggerfish can be found on the inshore rocks. Talk about some fine eating! Got our limit every day this week and from the looks of things they aren't slowing dow any time soon. Our by-catch lately has been big red snapper and scamp grouper.

Also, live bait is still around in areas. Sparse but still here nonetheless.

If your looking for a hook and cook, now is the time to do it! We were the only boat there the last few days and...

Fall 2015

Posted by Preston Muller on Wednesday, November 25, 2015,
Fishing remains strong with the warm start to our Fall this year. Water temps are in the low 70's still and the pelagic species are still here.
Also, the bay fishing is heating up. Flounder are trickling in and can be found on the leeward side of the inshore wrecks. We have also been catching them in the bay and harbor with short leaders and live bull minnows. Amberjack have moved in close and catching them on artificial has been the best way to target them. They are eating just about anythin...

April 2015

Posted by Preston Muller on Wednesday, April 29, 2015,
April is one of my favorite months to fish this area. The water seems to come alive and you can catch just about everything from sheepshead and redfish to Cobia and Kings. We have been doing a whole lot of CATCHING lately. I wish every month was as prolific as April.

I wanted to focus this report on king fishing because it is a popular fish in this area and I feel there are many misconceptions when it comes to "king trolling." This report is region specific as fishing for kings is diff...

Spring has sprung!

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, March 24, 2015,
What an awesome couple weeks it has been! We have been catching sheepshead and red fish daily in the bay and caught our first pompano today. The weather has cooperated and we have seen temps in the low 80's on a couple days. The bite has been strong both inshore and offshore. Getting our trip limit of Amberjack offshore has been doable each day this past week on our 6 plus hour trips. They are thick and we are seeing bigger fish in closer (30-38 inch fish.) The bait has also moved in closer. ...

Its Heating Up!!

Posted by Preston Muller on Thursday, March 5, 2015,
Its heating up!

We have noticed a noticeable change in the inshore scene lately. Spanish Mackerel are starting to migrate into the harbor which is always a great sign that warmer water is just around the corner. They are slim pickens and skittish but will eat a spoon presented in the right manner - not much size yet either but great to see them. We have not caught any on trees yet but it is just a matter of time. Sheepshead are here but finicky in the clean incoming tide water. They ar...

Are you looking to for a Destin Bay Fishing Charter? How about a Destin Deep Sea Charter? Check out our bi weekly reports and out Facebook for the where, when and how-to of Destin fishing!

Amberjack once again have been our go to the past week. After last weeks neap tide, they have become less finicky and will eat just about anything. I found that the best jig lately has been the "Shimano Butterfly Whirlijig" - it is a little wider than most jigs and has a bigger overall profile. It also b...

Pick Your Days January/Feb 2015

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, February 3, 2015,
Well it is no secret that this time of the year can produce some sloppy conditions for fishing here in the panhandle. It is either really nice or extremely rough. I find myself praying for calm conditions whenever I have a gulf charter this time of the year. With that being said, if you can find a North wind, its fishable on the beach. The flounder are still stacked on the leeward sides of reefs and seem to prefer natural bottom right now. Also, if you have patience try combing the beaches fo...

Gulf and near-shore fishing has been great lately especially if you can catch a day with a North wind. Big schools of Redfish are stacked off the bars East from the Destin pass. You can have all the fun you want using fluke style swim baits on jig heads. Live bait will also work but its a lot more fun on artificial!

Amberjack have been my go to lately. They are just too easy to target this time of year. We have still been using the butterfly jig method and it seems to be working the b...

I dont think I have ever worn 4 layers plus duck bibs to go snapper fishing in Febuary...ever! With that said, the weather is turning beautiful down here the past week or so. The water is still chilly but it won't be long before that starts getting warmer as well. March is upon us and the phone has been ringing more and more. We went out about 5 miles the other day ...

Welcome Winter Guests!

Posted by Preston Muller on Saturday, November 10, 2012,
A lot of misconceptions here on the Gulf is that once Summer is over, the fishing is too; when in actuality, its just the opposite. The fishery in Destin receives relentless pressure during the summer months and as a result, your "go to honey hole" in the Spring may not be as productive in the Summer due to many fishermen with the same idea. So, when the Summer pressure has lifted, the fish seem to become more and more hungry and those "honey holes' start producing more and more quality fish!...

September 2012

Posted by Preston Muller on Monday, September 24, 2012,
Wow, the waters have been teaming with action, especially the Gulf! Hurricane Issac wasn't all bad for us. In fact, it scattered lots of debris (logs, branches, foliage etc.) in the gulf and that has been the perfect attractant for Triple Tail and Mahi-Mahi. The weather/seas have been perfect so far - nice cool mornings and warm afternoons. Pair that with the great action and you have a recipe for a whole lot of CATCHING! We still have availability for the best month out of the year; October!...

Summer 2012 Update

Posted by Preston Muller on Sunday, July 1, 2012,
The 2012 Destin Fishing season is in full swing. With LOTS of Snapper and Grouper being caught within ten miles of the beach, customers have been having a blast! The Gulf bite continues to remain strong with a 2nd round of Cobia showing up; putting the total Cobia caught with Gulf-Angler fishing charters this summer at 22. Bay fishing is also been great with slot redfish being caught around the flats and docks and big trout being landed around bridges and pilings. Gulf-Angler fishing charters...

Spring Has Sprung!

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, March 13, 2012,
For everyone that lives below the Mason Dixon line, we are all very aware that Old Man Winter just never showed up this year. Well, for us fishermen that was a good thing! That means, the water never really had a chance to cool down like normal so the bite remained very strong all "Winter" long. As a result of the unseasonably warm weather, we have had early Cobia sightings and the Spanish mackerel have showed up in hoards out of nowhere (at least the small ones have anyway.) I would venture ...

Feb. 14th 2012

Set out for another Bay trip today and I have to say it was another successful trip! Fished some familiar areas as well as a couple new spots. Despite the 24 hour cold snap, the water continues to hover around 60 degrees. Today was mostly cloudy and winds were around 10-15 knots. We caught Sheepshead, Redfish and a pretty uncommon (for Destin) Black Sea Bass. Live Shrimp was the bait of choice for today and they proved deadly around the jetties and Destin Bridge. Pictures to come in the Troph...

1-29-12 Night Fishing

Posted by Preston Muller on Monday, January 30, 2012,
Dave, Marshall and I set out at 5pm for some night fishing in the Bay. There was a falling tide all evening so naturally the bite was on. Immediately, Marshal was locked in to a nice fish but it broke off boat-side before we could catch a glimpse. Next it was me who got hooked up. The battle was on with my light tackle outfit. The fish made several fast breaks toward deeper water, taking line with him. I fought him for 3 or 4 minutes on my Tierra until I finally had him in the boat.A nice  28...

Jared, his father Joe and friend Scott wanted to do a little deep sea fishing while in town from Kentucky. My boat was getting serviced so a quick phone call to another Sea Hunt owner (Marshal Buscemi) and we were locked in for 5:30 am. A short weather delay set us back a bit but none the less, we hit the water at around 6:45 AM. Marshal already had his boat stocked to the brim with gear and ice so after a quick stop to the pin-fish traps, we headed South. First stop was in about 80 foot of...

We decided to split up the crew into two separate trips (one leaving at 5am and one leaving at 1pm). My alarm sounded at 3:45 the next morning and I began my usual prep for a day on the water - water, rods, ice, bait, PFD's, fuel and tackle. I checked everything off and set out to meet everyone.

It has been quite a season so far. We have made every trip count this year and have really "filled the boat" with quality fish. As summer winds down, I am already getting excited about what is ahead. Late Summer/early Fall is undoubtedly my favorite time of year to fish. The bite is always on and you don't have to fight the summer crowds and hoards of boats in the Destin Pass. We came through the pass and immediately put out two lines; one on top and one further back about 3 feet under the surface. Right away there was a hit; "FISH ON" everyone yelled! SNAPPER FEVER

Posted by Preston Muller on Saturday, June 18, 2011,

As you all know, Snapper season is IN and let me tell you, there have been some NICE ones hauled in this year! The limited regulations have allowed the Snapper population to increase exponentially to the point where it is impossible NOT to catch one. There are plenty of live bottom spots just outside the Destin pass that hold Snapper, TriggerFish, Juvenile AJ's and a Grouper here and there. Last week we must have hauled in a total of 50 keepers. My freezer is full and all of my close friends ...

Once again, beautiful thread fin herring were in the hundreds of thousands. Boats were all bunched together collecting their loot as we joined in to catch ours. We caught 40 or 50 and headed out. By the way, it was CALM as ever. We were able to run wide open the whole way out to the 14 mile location. Lots of action on top. Bait and Jacks tore up ...

JACK ATTACK

Posted by Preston Muller on Thursday, May 5, 2011,
Mike Milano (Kyagra to many) chartered my boat out for Tuesday. He showed up to the docks with a plethora of rods and reels; something for every type of fishing. One in particular caught my eye. It was a winch of a reel - older model Penn, deep crimson in color. It was spooled with what looked to be about 1,000 yards of thick braided line. Looked to be about a 9/0 and measured about 8 inches across. The rod that the reel was mounted to was brand new; still had the price tag and plastic around...

Reel Time

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, December 7, 2010,

It is that time of year again when many hours are devoted to delicate reel repairs and tedious preperations for the next summer fishing season. It is crucial that the the right amount of care goes into the preventative maintance of your reels (especially reels that are used in salt water). In order to get the most out of your fishing reels, you have to consistantly lubricate the bearings and gears and flush out the salt residue. Salt water build up will seize up a reel in a few days time; eve...

The water was ALIVE with fish today! Although rough and blown out, we made the best of the situation hooking up to several fish. Jackson spotted a school of Jack Crevalle near my dad's...

Hog Town June 21, 2010

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, June 22, 2010,

Mike and I headed to Hogtown today once again in search of a nice red or speckled trout. Shady weather and a poor fishing forecast had us throwing every combination of lures we could think of to catch a fish. Six straight hours and only two bites! Finally, Mike spotted a dead "LY" bait that was floating on the surface. He put it on a half ounce jig-head and what do you know...I look over and Mike's hooked up! It turned out to be a nice spec! Gongrats again bud!

Bay Trip June 18, 2010

Posted by Preston Muller on Saturday, June 19, 2010,

Mike and I decided to hit the Choctawhatchee bay today! Our target: the elusive Red Fish! We were on the water at 1:00 and the first cast produced a lady fish! It was a start to what we thought woud be a productive day! The bay was CALM as could be for the first ten minutes and then out of nowhere 30-40 mph winds and dark skies! We were not about to let a summer storm ruin our fishing trip so, we waited it out near a shallow beach. It soon passed and we were back at it. A couple catfish and...

Report from Saturday

Posted by Preston Muller on Sunday, June 13, 2010,

So, my father in law, Neal, drove in early from Montgomery for an all day kayak fishing trip. We both were excited to spend the day fishing together so we headed out to my usual spot. Around 11:00 Neal had his first hit and within about 10 minutes we had a Snapper in the fish bag. This was Neal's first kayak snapper so he was thrilled to have bagged one so early (congrats again)! The day slowed down quite a bit from there though. The bites became few and far between until finally I look over ...

June 1st 2010 Report

Posted by Preston Muller on Wednesday, June 2, 2010,

Every day that I get to fish is a GOOD day even if we don't catch much. But, there are some days that are GREAT and unforgettable; June 1, 2010 was just that! Mike Howe and I hit the water early at about 6:40 in the morning and were welcomed by calm, crystal clear water! We headed out South West toward the shelf and in no time we were catching fish! A 27 inch Grouper and an 18 inch Red Snapper were our first two catches followed by a Sand Shark that Mike hooked up to! Talk about a kid in a ca...

Look Out Red Snapper!!

Posted by Preston Muller on Tuesday, May 25, 2010,

I know everone is especially excited about this year's Snapper season for a couple reasons. First, this may be the last fishable season in the Gulf of Mexico for a long time! With the oil drifting aimlessly about in our federal waters, the unknown is killing us! When will it get here? Is it going to get here? How bad is it? These are questions on every fisherman's mind right now so optimism is the key word! Also, I know everyone that has been bottom fishing this year has hauled up HUGE Red Sn...
